The Hunted
Before I arrived in camp my brother Don called in
and shot this nice plump cow by himself.  He shot
her at 15 yards.  Not too bad for doing it all yourself.
My brother Jack with the "World's Unluckiest Cow Elk".
Jack shot her at 20 yards, getting a pass through
double lung shot.  She then turned and ran back the
way she came and in a big circle that brought her by me
at a dead run at 15 feet.  I shot her with an arrow that
went in tjust behind the ribs on the left side and exited
just under her right front leg.  She then turned to the left
and ran by my brother Don who shot her at 12 feet.
She died 23 yards from Don.
She ran nearly 100 yards in a "?" pattern that put her
past three hunters in a triangle pattern.  I was
approximately 40 yards from Jack and Don was about
60 yards from me and 80 yards from Jack.
Wes shot this nice spike bull several days after Jack
shot his elk.  The shot was 40 yards.  I think it was Wes'
first elk with a bow.  Wes and I dragged him about a
quarter mile down the mountain before field dressing
him.  We didn't want to contaminate the area where we
had been hunting.  After gutting him out we dragged him
about another quarter mile before Don and Darrell
showed up to help us drag him.  We had to cut him in
half to get him loaded onto the 4-wheeler.
Jack likes grouse so he tried to shoot them every
chance he got.  This is one of two he shot with his
bow.
During another hunt Wes actually knocked one out
of a tree with a big stick he threw at the bird.  The
thing was stupid enough to sit there and let Wes try
again when he missed it the first time..
