Patrol Squadron One
VP-1 Screaming Eagles
NAS Whidbey Island, WA
NAS Whidbey Island is located just north of the town of Oak Harbor on the northern end of Whidbey Island.
NAS Whidbey became the Patrol Squadron base for the West Coast after NAS Moffet Field,CA and NAS
Barbers Point, HI were shut down.  It is within several hours drive of Seattle, Canada, and the Cascade
VP-1 was my final duty station and I was only stationed there for about 18 months.  During that time I made my
third full deployment to Diego Garcia, B.I.O.T. in the Indian Ocean.  Many improvements had been made to the
facilities on the Island since I had last been there in the early 80's.  New barracks had been built and the they
were much nicer than the plywood and screen huts we had in "Splinterville".  Splinterville was stil there but the
huts had been updated and turned over to civilian contractors and were now known as "Splendidville", a
misnomer if there ever was one.
